The Heart of England Tour    (1 Night/2 Days)

A satisfying trip which looks at parts of England less visited than the better-known 'popular' places. The result is quieter roads leading to less commercialised and charming, historic little towns, where the residents seem more genuinely welcoming. A refreshing absence of crowds and fewer of the 'Big Bus' tour groups*, will continue to ensure the popularity of this very pleasant tour ..

*The city of Cambridge excepted!

Day 1: We begin with a 90 minute drive to the famous University town of Cambridge. A walking tour of some of the town's sights and historic colleges is a must! The group will then have an hour or so of additional free time to take a closer look at Cambridge's offerings, before we make a short drive to see the impressively well-maintained American Cemetery, where we'll take time to pause for reflection and respect.

A very pleasant drive along meandering lanes into some of the least changed countryside in England will bring us to a friendly country inn where lunch awaits. (A good pub lunch is something which no visitor to Britain should miss - and we know where the best ones are to be found!)

Later, not far away, is the site of an ancient castle which saw many important historic events, including the execution of Mary, Queen of the Scots. The remainder of the day is free for you to explore a charming old market town, which will give the shoppers an opportunity to indulge, before we head for our overnight hotel, or guest house. Don't worry, it may be 200 or 300 years old, but the comforts are all decidedly modern!

Day 2:  Following a good, hearty breakfast our group will set off to explore some of the lesser known gems of the East Midlands. Did anyone try Stilton Cheese last night? Today we'll see where both the world-famous cheese, and the ubiquitous pork pies are made. (You must try one - they taste so much better when fresh!)

A village inn for lunch, then we'll visit a fine stately home and admire its' treasures, and stroll the beautiful gardens. (Princess Diana's home - Althorp is possible during July and August).

Have you ever wondered why the English make such a fuss about afternoon tea? Well, we're going to give you an opportunity to find out later this afternoon! Don't be surprised if you're converted, it's an exceedingly 'civilised' custom!

Before we know it, the day's end is approaching and it's time to end our tour with a short motorway journey home, arriving early evening. Everyone will have their own favourite memories from this short, but satisfying little tour; and on one thing I'm sure they'll all agree.."it may have only been a short trip ... but it was packed with so many interesting experiences that we feel we've been away much longer than only 2 days!"
