Christopher's Column for all Kids ..
Issue No. 6 Summer 2006
Hi everyone!
My name's Christopher. I'm 10 years old and live in London, England, UK and this is my column for kids. I go to Deanesfield School in South Ruislip.
Sorry we missed a Spring column this year but here's a bumper Summer one to make up for it.
From time to time I will be adding some new stuff, so please put this on your Favourites and come back again to see what's happening.
We start a new feature this issue. It's about hobbies and some of the different activities people like to do. If you have a hobby, sports activity or other interest that you would like to see up here let me know and tell me about it, how you got into it, and advice for others who may want to give it a try. I'll get my Dad to include it in the next issue.
By the way, if your parents don't know you're seeing this please show it to them and always ask their permission before you surf the net or send e-mails to anyone.
I hope you enjoy this issue - see you soon
Best wishes, Christopher.

Thousands ordered to leave their homes as Indonesian volcano threatens to erupt
Lava has been flowing from Mount Merapi, which means "Mountain of Fire," since Thursday but now the warning has been raised to the highest level.
More than 5,000 people living near the 3,000m high volcano have been moved to tents and shelters in safe areas.
Local television showed lava flowing from the crater, thick clouds of rising smoke and a large fireball. |
 |
One resident said: "I could see the lava clearly from my home this morning. Then they ordered us to evacuate our village."
Indonesia has at least 129 active volcanoes including Mount Merapi which killed 70 people in 1994 and 1,300 in 1930. |

Freedom of the Seas - the world's largest passenger ship - completes her first transatlantic voyage.
| The massive ship can carry up to 4,375 passengers in more than 1,800 rooms.
It cost £421m ($700m) to build - left Southampton on 3 May and sailed to Hamburg, Germany, then Oslo, Norway, before reaching New York.
The amazing liner is 339m long - that's the same length as 37 double-decker buses - and weighs 160,000 tones! |

That's me patting the white mule at the Donkey Sanctuary in Nerja, Andalucia. The place is run by people who want to help old mules and donkeys which are often neglected when they're too old to work anymore.
There are also cats, kittens and a few dogs there. We took a big bag of carrots and fed the donkeys.
Visitors are always welcome - they say it's good for the animals to have lots of attention - some never had any kindness before. Here's their website if you want to know more about them .. |

Here's another view from Spain. It's Nerja and shows 'our mountain' which dad and I climbed last year. I posted a photo of myself on the summit in the last issue - to see it click here.
It looks easy from here - but it wasn't, I can tell you! It's over 5,000 feet high and took more than four hours to climb up and two and a half hours to come down. |
