Lincoln Cathedral E:  'The Cathedral at Lincoln is out and out the most precious piece of architecture in the British Isles', John Ruskin. The Magna Carta has an iconic status both in Britain and the USA as a cornerstone of civil liberties: its most famous clause - that no man shall be imprisoned without judgment of his peers or by the law of the land - is cited in debates about new anti-terrorist laws or the detention camps at Guantanamo Bay. Four copies of the original charter of 1215 survive, one of which is in the archives of the Cathedral.

Nene Valley Railway E:  The Nene Valley Railway has bigger and more impressive steam engines, but to younger visitors, the Railway is the home of 'Thomas'. Built in 1947, No 1800 spent all its working life at the British Sugar Corporation's Peterborough factory. Thanks to its immaculate blue livery it soon became known as 'Thomas' to Society members. At the BSC's National Sports and Family Day in '71 and '72 No. 1800 was used to give people short brake van rides. In 1971 Rev W Awdry, author of the 'Thomas' books came to an open day and agreed to name No. 1800 'Thomas'.

Normanby Hall Country Park E: 300 acres of parkland and woodland to stroll through following one of the trails. Experience the changing seasons from carpets of snowdrops and daffodils in spring to spectacular rhododendrons in summer and glorious leaf colour in autumn. The woodland contains superb mature beeches, oaks and sweet chestnuts. There are also more unusual species like the Tulip Tree and the Handkerchief Tree. You'll also find dozens of species of birds, butterflies and wild flowers in the woodland, along with squirrels.

Norwich Cathedral E: For over 900 years this iconic building has stood as a witness to the glory of God. The Cathedral is a building that has always been greatly loved by the people of Norfolk. During its first 450 years it formed part of a thriving Benedictine monastery serving the needs of the monks and other worshippers, pilgrims, travellers, and scholars as well as the people of Norfolk. The work of today's cathedral community remains grounded in the principles of its Benedictine founders namely worship, hospitality, and learning.

RHS Garden Hyde Hall: E: RHS Garden Hyde Hall was donated to the Society in 1993. Nearly 40 years of work has brought it from a windswept hill with just six mature trees, to the present day Garden of 24 acres.

Regia Anglorum: Regia Anglorum was a term used by early English writers to describe the English state, meaning 'The Kingdoms of the English'. In a 20th century context Regia Anglorum is a nationwide society with many independent local groups, from Scotland to the south coast, who all work within a tight set of common sense rules, attempting to recreate a cross section of English life around AD950 - 1066, although our events may sometimes be set a few decades either side of these dates.
Rousham House SM: The work of William Kent (1685-1748), Rousham represents the first phase of English landscape design and remains almost as he left it, one of the few gardens of this date to have escaped alteration, with many features which delighted C18th century visitors still in situ, such as the ponds and cascades in Venus' Vale, the Cold Bath, and seven arched Praeneste, Townsend's Building, the Temple of the Mill, and, on the skyline, a sham ruin known as the 'Eyecatcher'.

Concert Halls & Opera Houses

Academy of Ancient Music: London: One of the world’s first and foremost period-instrument orchestras. Concerts across six continents and over 250 recordings since its formation by Christopher Hogwood in 1973 demonstrate the AAM’s pre-eminence in the music of the period 1600–1850, from Monteverdi to Mendelssohn. It takes its name from a London concert society which was established in 1726 for the purpose of studying and performing ‘old’ music — defined initially as music composed at least a century earlier, but soon to include more contemporary composers, most notably Handel. The site also contains concerts and recordings listings.

Barbican Hall: London: Europe's largest multi-arts and conference venue, it presents a year-round programme of art, music, film and theatre. Designed in the 60s and built in the 1970s, it's owned, funded and managed by the Corporation of London, the third largest sponsor of the arts in the UK, and was built as ’the City’s gift to the nation’. A diverse programme of world-class performing and visual arts, encompassing all forms of classical & contemporary music, international theatre and dance, visual arts and design, and a cinema programme which blends first-run films with special themed seasons. Site has full listings of concerts and events.

City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra M: Since Symphony Hall opened in 1991, it has been acclaimed as one of the finest concert halls in the world by critics, performers and public alike. The classical music programme is complemented by rock, pop, folk, country and jazz music, and even stand-up comedy. The renowned acoustics of the Hall have attracted virtually every established musical figure on the world stage, and have also enabled the CBSO to record many award-winning discs. In October 2001, Symphony Hall celebrated the inauguration of its magnificent new Symphony Organ built by Klais, a company of German organ builders.

Leeds Town Hall Leeds International Concert Season is run by Leeds City Council and is the largest local authority music programme in the UK. We programme more than 200 concerts a year in the Leeds area.

London Coliseum London: English National Opera's home. The ENO started in the slums of Waterloo in the late 19th century thanks to property owner and Old Vic owner Emma Cons, whose niece, Lilian Baylis from South Africa ran the theatrical entertainment for the poor. She put on opera and Shakespeare and, because this was all new to the people in Waterloo, she made sure that the opera was always sung in English. All through the 1920s and ‘30s Lilian Baylis put on opera, Shakespeare and eventually ballet, all done on a shoe string, but by the end of her life, she had created the companies that became The Royal Ballet, the Royal National Theatre and the English National Opera.

Royal Albert Hall:  London: The Royal Albert Hall has a long and rich history as one of the world's leading entertainment venues. Since its first concert in 1871 over 150,000 performances have taken place in the auditorium. There's a wide range of events: from the annual Delta Champions Tennis Tournament to the BBC Summer Proms to Jazz and Rock concerts, to Opera and Ballet productions. The site contains a full Listings guide.

Royal Festival Hall: London: The South Bank Centre comprises The Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Purcell Room and the Hayward Gallery, sharing the site with the independently managed National Theatre and the National Film Theatre. It became an independent arts organisation in April 1988 after two years operating as a constituent part of the Arts Council. The Hayward Gallery was built in 1968 and was funded and managed by the Arts Council of Great Britain until April 1987 when its administration moved to the South Bank Centre.

Royal Opera House Covent Garden London: The Royal Opera was formed as the Covent Garden Opera Company in 1946, but behind it lies a tradition of operatic performance which goes back for more than 260 years at its home in Covent Garden. In each of the three theatres there have been on the site since 1732, opera has played an important role. The Royal Ballet is Great Britain's most prestigious ballet company. The site gives full listings.

St. John's Smith Square: London: In the heart of Westminster, one of London's major concert venues and favourite historic buildings. Valued for its superb acoustic, it presents an extremely varied programme of classical music throughout the concert season, ranging from choirs and symphony orchestras to solo instrumental recitals. See the website for full listing of forthcoming concerts.

St. Martin in the Fields: London: Since 1726 has played host to some of the greatest musicians: Handel played at St Martin’s on its first organ and Mozart is said to have given a concert in the church. The Academy of St Martin in the Fields was formed in 1959 by Sir Neville Marriner and the then Master of Music, John Churchill. It remains the most recorded chamber orchestra in the world. The orchestra still performs at St Martin’s. The church's fine acoustics attract some of the world’s leading orchestras, chamber ensembles, instrumentalists and choirs and with over 350 concerts per year is one of the busiest venues in the country. Concerts are performed by candlelight.

Sadlers Wells London: A strong, dynamic contemporary programme, dedicated to bringing the very best international and UK dance to London audiences. Opened 1998 and breaks new ground in theatre design, but behind the stylish glass, brick, wood and steel of this new theatre is a 250 year history and six previous Sadlers Wells theatres which occupied the same site since the very first SW theatre opened in 1683.

Wigmore Hall: London: Built in 1901 by the Bechstein piano company, Wigmore Hall is justifiably regarded as one of the world's great recital halls, attracting the leading classical musicians of our time, and often setting the standard for international chamber music and song. Wigmore Hall's artistic programming is complemented by a highly innovative and diverse Community & Education programme.
