Castle Fraser: Approaching Castle Fraser down the Broad Walk, the granite walls rising up to the distinctive turrets make an imposing sight. This was the impression the lairds intended as the present castle took shape between 1575 and 1636 – a statement of pride for the Fraser family and a show of strength to any would-be detractors. Venture through the castle and up to the round tower, with its panoramic views of the gardens and estate beyond for a sense of life from medieval to the Victorian period.

Castleton House Hotel: Castleton is a country house hotel in the heart of Tayside close to many of Scotland’s major attractions including Glamis Castle and Scone Palace.  The 6 bedroomed hotel is listed in the top 200 hotels of the UK and holds 3 AA rosettes for its cuisine.  Lunches and Dinners are served everyday and non residents are welcome.

Crathes Castle: 16th-century tower house on an estate granted to the Burnett family in 1323 by King Robert the Bruce, who presented them with the ancient Horn of Leys, which you can see in the Great Hall. Watch out for the ‘trip’ step, intended to disconcert attackers climbing the staircase. Imagine being a member of court walking the extravagant long gallery, or picture Lady Katherine and her friends playing music, sewing and chatting in the Muses Room. Feel a slight chill? It may be the Green Lady, Crathes’ own ghost who is said to have first appeared in the mid-18th century.

Drum Castle:A visit to Drum Castle is a little like striding across the centuries. Its chameleon-like character has evolved with the additions made to the building over the years. Here you’ll find a medieval tower, a Jacobean mansion house and several ‘modern’ additions by Victorian lairds. This was the work of 21 generations of the Irvine family who lived here for over 650 years.

Lauriston Castle: Lauriston Castle was left in trust to the nation by its last private owners, Mr and Mrs William Robert Reid, who lived there from 1902 to 1926. Originally a 1590s tower house, the castle was built for Sir Archibald Napier, and extended during the 1820s by the architect William Burn for its then owner, Thomas Allan. Each year, Lauriston hosts a programme of outdoor and indoor events, from spring to Christmas. Its superb croquet lawns are home to the Edinburgh Croquet Club.

Leith Hall, Garden & Estate: A charming family home, built over three centuries and home to the Leith-Hay family until the mid-C20th, when the house, furnishings and paintings were left to the Trust. Walking through the elegant rooms you get a feeling for how they lived. Now a picturesque and tranquil place, but the last two lairds died within months of each other in 1939, and in 1763 John Leith was murdered in Aberdeen, his ghost reputedly still walking here, recently featured on TV's ' Most Haunted'.
