TOUR 14: HEVER CASTLE AND SISSINGHURST GARDENS (7/8 hours)

Visit Hever Castle, whose oldest part dates back to 1270. The courtship of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn took place here at her family home. Hever was bought by William Waldorf Astor, a very wealthy American, in the 1890's and he lavished millions of dollars on restoring the castle, gardens and Tudor village.

Hever drawbridge           Courtyard

Created by writers Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson, Sissinghurst is one of the loveliest gardens in England. It is on the site of a great 16th century Tudor mansion which, had partially disappeared when the couple bought the property in 1930. Years of hard work, lovingly applied with great care and skill have produced a corner of the lovely county of Kent which is now world famous with garden-lovers.

There's much to see including a Roman lighthouse, Saxon church, Norman Keep, secret World War Two tunnels, exhibitions etc. Canterbury - whose Cathedral, founded in 597, is the oldest in England, and witnessed in 1170 the martyrdom of the Archbishop, Thomas a Becket. Since that time, pilgrims have visited this wonderful church in their thousands. The town of Canterbury retains much of its medieval character, whilst offering some good shopping.

Established over 1000 years ago, beautiful medieval Leeds Castle was built in the centre of a lake. Transformed in the 20th century into a comfortable home by Lady Baillie, daughter of Lord Queenborough and his American-born wife (Whitney family). An excellent maze, aviary and English garden complete the attractions.
